Aerobical citrate utilization by Escherichia coli
Bacteria have evolved a multitude of starvation inducible mechanisms that lead to profound changes in cellular physiology. These changes have enabled cells to increase their ability of survival under many different environmental stresses. Typically, Escherichia coli is unable to utilize citrate as the sole source of carbon due to the cryptic citrate gene. The goal of this study has been to investigate the effects of prolonged period of starvation on bacterial cells in stationary phase of growth. Our results showed that E. coli wild-type cells, strains C600 and AB1157, became capable to grow on Simmons citrate agar after ten days of incubation in the rich nutrient broth medium. The frequency of cells with changed phenotype ranges from 4 per 109 to 8 per 105 cells for strain AB1157. This phenomenon has not been noticed in rpoS and recA mutants of E. coli.
