Calcium (Ca) supplementation during suckling period increases skeletal Ca content in rats
The aim of the study was to evaluate if skeletal Ca content of suckling rat pups can be influenced by artificial feeding containing different amounts of Ca. The results show that Ca supplementation during suckling period increases Ca content of the rat skeleton. Such an experiment could serve as a suitable model for studying skeletal sesponse to Ca intake during infancy. To what extent intervention with Ca during early post-natal growth may have permanent implications with regard to skeletal development and peak bone mass acquisition remains to be established.
