Some practical aspects of control engineering education
The pedagogical dilemma in control engineering education (CEE) arises from the fact that control, more than almost any other discipline, is based on two distinct streams of thought. One stream is physical and discipline-based and the other stream is mathematics-based. This duality has raised, over the years, regular complaints about the gap between theory and practice. Following the generic nature of control system development, it is a pressing need to adapt control education to the new information-rich future. In this paper we present our experience and our attitude to CEE. Special attention is given to some practical aspects of CEE which are, in our opinion, very important in enabling engineers to remain current and competitive in an ever changing, advancing, global marketplace. In such a way the students skills, creativity and innovation, necessary to succeed in an information age, can be successfully developed.
