Possibilities of growing basil (Ocimum basilicum) in Istria
The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of black PE mulch film on yield and quality by using three basil varieties: 'Genovese', 'Holanđanin' and 'Violeto aromatico' cultivated in Galižana, Croatia. The basil was harvested three times in the vegetation, just before flowering, leaving 10 cm of plant above the ground. Analyses showed that the highest vegetative growth and total yield was achieved by the variety 'Genovese' in combination with black PE mulch film. The most successful variety in percentage of leaf was 'Violeto aromatico' with 64.89 % in the uncovered earth and 64.36 % in the ones covered by a black polyethylene mulch film. Intensive harvesting affected the vegetative growth and branching of basil positively, which resulted in an increased percentage of leaf in the third harvest of all three varieties. Highest content of ethereal oil in dried leaf was detected in 'Genovese', and the lowest in 'Violeto aromatico'. The black PE film statistically doesn’t affect the quality of basil cultivated in Istria.
