Politics of Identity and Liberalism
Politics of identity and culturalist politics base their proposals on the thesis that there is something deep in distinctive cultural identities. Paul Gilbert convincingly refuses the thesis of depth of objective identities. On the other hand, he does not discuss the possibility of deep subjective identities, as debated, for example, by Akeel Bilgrami. The concept of deep subjective identity provides relevant requirements for liberal theories of justice and for deliberative democracy based on public reasons. The issue of self-respect, to which is dedicated the last part of the paper, appears as relevant, as well. Here the relation between identity as standing and self-respect is debated.
