Heavy Metal Pollution Screening of Topsoils Using Magnetic Susceptibility

The heavy metal pollution “hot spot” between the towns of Spremberg and Weisswaser in Lausitz region, Eastern Germany – part of so called “The black triangle” (open pit coal mining and coal power plants area), is affected and contaminated by anthropogenic input. The objective of this research was to use magnetic susceptibility (MS) measurements on topsoil to detect, map and characterize anthropogenic pollution from fly-ash dust mostly originating from the thermoelectric power plants Schwarze Pumpe and Boxberg. Also, one of the research targets was to investigate if new prototype instrument for down-hole magnetic susceptibility measurements SM400, which was first time ever tested in the field, can be used for rapid and low-cost in situ detection of heavy metal pollution. This investigation was carried out within the scope of EU FP5 project “MAGPROX” and fieldwork was done using only older forest soils to assure against recent human activity. For comparison reasons, various field instruments for magnetic susceptibility detecting and mapping were used based on 140 sampling points with an average grid density of about 1 km. Besides SM400, Bartington MS2D loop, SM30 magnetic susceptibility meter in combination with GPS (Global Positioning System) were used. Humax soil hand penetrator (Humax Schlagsonde) in conjunction with plastic casing was used for the soil sampling. In laboratory, as additional confirmation, MS profiles were obtained from the separate subsamples of all soil cores using Bartington MS2C and KLY-2 kappabridge instruments. Obtained results from all the instruments are found to be comparable and acceptable. Compared with other instruments SM400 proved to be an efficient tool for indicating and environmental monitoring of potentially contaminated areas.
