Church, State and Society in Post-Communist Europe
The paper gives an overview of Church-state relations in post-communist European countries, and analyze them from a comparative perspective, in particular from the point of view of Church-state relations in Western Europe. The basic socioreligious profile of eight post-communist countries is also presented, while the particular attention is devoted to social expectations of people about the social role of religion, such as the role of religion in democracy, and for the economic development, religious engagement in various social issues, etc. The main argument of the paper is that social expectation is the relevant factor for studying church-state relations, and it points to other social and cultural factors in order to explain differences among countries.
