Calibration of Glass Electrode in Terms of [H+] and Determination of Stoicheiometric Equilibrium Constants
In order to determine the parameters of glass-electrode cell, potentiometric titrations of aqueous solutions of two weak acids {tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane (THAM) and potassium hydrogenphthalate (KHP)} with a strong base (KOH) were performed. The ionic strength of the medium was maintained nearly constant (0.1 mol/L) by adding an excess of strong electrolytes (KNO3 + KCl) thus ensuring approximate constancy of ionic activity coefficients. Cell calibration parameters, as well as the values of stoicheiometric (de)hydronation constants were computed from the titration data by means of an iterative optimisation procedure.
