Vigna mungo L. (Wilzek) and Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp) in a comparative study
The aim of the investigation was to find differences in yield and selected parameters of cowpea and mungbean, legumes with high drought tolerance, sporadically cultivated on the Adriatic Coast and islands. The field experiment was carried out as randomized complete block design with four replications. Mungbeans and cowpea were cultivated on brown soil in the valley of the river Mirna from June, 20th to October 3rd, 2012. Consumer seeds of cowpea and two populations of mungbeans were sown on a spacing of 40 x 20 cm. The whole growth period from sowing to harvest lasted 105 days. Short before harvesting, the plants had about 70 cm height, approximately 20 leaves and 17-19 pods. Cowpea forms by tendency less pods per plant than mungbean: these pods are significantly longer and heavier, with a significant lower number of heavier seeds per pod. The total yield of seeds didn’t show significant differences between species. The yield ranged from 150, 9 and 168, 9 gm- 2 (1, 5-1, 7 tha-1) for mungbeans and 225, 8 gm-2 for cowpea (2, 3 tha-1).
