High-frequency power transformer modeling
The detailed study of high-frequency over- voltages propagating inside the electrical systems of a power plant requires a precise modeling of power transformers at high frequencies. These over- voltages may originate from lightning overvoltage propagating along the transmission line and crossing the step-up transformer, they may originate also for instance from vacuum circuit breaker switching. Power transformers possess several natural frequencies and steep front over- voltages are particularly dangerous for them because a large part of the applied over-voltage is concentrated on the first turn of the windings. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Zagreb and EDF R&D are working in collaboration to develop a model of transformer for high- frequencies compatible with EMTP-RV. The presentation shows some elements of this work.
