Nutritional habits of Croatian population: historic and contemporary trends
The republic of Croatia is a relatively small country with a wide diversity of traditional diets. Two very different traditions are seen in continental and Mediterranean regions. This geographic diversity is one of the main factors and influences that caused diffeerences in diet. The second, equally important factor in historical development of dietary tradition is reflected in the socioeconomic status, which in most cases has not been very high throughout Crootian history. First studies of dietary habits in Croatia document a lower nutritional levels and numerous deficits, as well as diseases connected to this, such as gout and rickets, and lately of numerous complex diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and colorectal carcinomes.
