The process of globalization includes the situation where information and scientific insights are instantly accessible around the world, and the life span or usability of acquired knowledge is getting shorter. This is why modern market economy requires fast adaptation to new market challenges, and life-long learning, as a permanent process in all areas and all population groups, has become the foundation of contemporary education strategy. In the course of further harmonization with the EU higher education system the Republic of Croatia needs to put in more effort to properly educate and steer the students in their choices as they are the most important capital for future economic development. We should strive to cancel or modify traditional bureaucratic structures which have been limiting the innovative, entrepreneurial and creative capabilities of each individual - student. The paper brings into context an individual's career and the role of higher education systems in career development. The practical goal of the paper is to propose guidelines for optimal alignment of timely career planning and development with the requirements of the labour market. All this should contribute to positive changes in further development of the entire society.
