Transients Caused by Uncontrolled and Controlled Switching of Circuit Breakers
This paper describes transients caused by uncontrolled and controlled switching of high- voltage circuit breakers. Inrush currents due to shunt reactor energization were analyzed. Switching-off, energization and auto-reclosure of unloaded 400 kV transmission line is presented. Transient recovery voltage and voltage distribution between breaking chambers of circuit breaker are investigated. Calculation models were developed in EMTP-RV software and some field measurements are presented. Results show that controlled switching significantly reduces inrush currents and suppresses switching overvoltages.
