A Contrastive Analysis of Hesitation in English and Croatian Speech Production in the Media
This research paper offers a contrastive analysis of hesitation in English and Croatian speech production in the media. More precisely, the focus is on the fluency of the speech of radio hosts. Given the fact that some hosts hesitate more than others, the aim of this thesis is to see whether the frequency of hesitation markers can be related to the formal education of the host. If so, we can suppose that greater fluency of speech might be achieved through practice. In order test this, the speech of 32 American and Croatian radio hosts was analyzed, both on public and commercial radio stations, with eight minutes of each host’s speech recorded during a radio interview.
