The changing pattern of gender differences in behavioural and biomedical cardiovascular risk factors in Croatian adults: insights from the CROHORT study.
We aimed to present an overview of epidemiology of behavioural and biomedical cardiovascular risk factors in Croatia over this period and we analyzed the data from the 2008 Croatian Adult Health Cohort (CROHORT) study, a follow-up to the 2003 Croatian Adult Health Survey. Both studies aimed to provide a comprehensive description of health determinants, including the assessment of behavioural and biomedical characteristics in a representative sample of Croatian adults. We observed a significant increase in the proportion of obese women (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 ; 26% in 2003 to 34% in 2008), while there were no similar temporal trends evident in men (24% to 25%). The proportion of persons with hypertension increased significantly, both in men (53% to 66%) and in women (45% to 60%).The proportion of participants who were found to be physically inactive did not vary significantly during the given time period (women 34% to 38% ; men 33% to 37%), while there was a significant decrease of the number of women having an unhealthy diet (12% to 10%), a difference which was not observed in men (18% to 17%). While some of our findings may be explained by aging of the investigated sample, the overall trend warrants attention. Aside from hypercholesterolemia and elevated blood glucose, which were self-reported, this study revealed the precise status of the key biomedical and behavioural risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in Croatia.
