Croatia: economy
Since 2008, the Croatian economy has been faced now with more than four years of almost continuous recession with real GDP growth for this four year period amounting to a contraction of 11.2%. Trends in industrial production further continue indicate the severe structural weaknesses of the Croatian economy. In 2009–12 industrial production fell cumulatively by 17.0%. The negative developments in the real sector also had a concomitant effect on the labor market since 2009. Registered unemployment rate increased to 17.6% in 2010 ; 17.8% in 2011 and exploded to 21.9% in February 2013. Regarding the international environment, due to faster growth of exports of both goods and services and continued decline in imports due to contraction of demand in 2012, the current account balanced in 2012 to even very modest surplus in foreign trade (0.03% in HRK value), for the first time after 14 years of continuous deficit. Growth was predicted to recover modestly in 2014, primarily due to increased strategic investments (especially in infrastructure, energy and tourism), as well as thanks to the expected recovery of the economies of the eurozone and awaited positive effects of Croatia’s accession to the EU. Some of the positive effects on the country’s economic outlook in the near term could also be attributed to the more prudent policy-making, especially with respect to budget expenditures and the implementation of much needed reforms such as labour market reform
