Coaching the newest generation of interdisciplinarians

In this workshop we are going to present the perspectives of doctoral candidates and early stage researchers on the interdisciplinary aspects of doctoral training. We believe that our input will serve to follow from the EUA CDE workshop on interdisciplinary doctoral programs (which we were unfortunately not able to participate in). We will present the results of an internal survey that we are planning to conduct in Eurodoc. The survey results will enlighten the workshop with the experience of those who have recently acquired a doctorate and those who are still in a process of acquiring one. We will focus on various aspects that were recently highlighted by EUA (time and effort, several supervisors and assessment), ESF (peer-review procedures) and the European Commission (opportunities of cross-fertilization). We also highlight interdisciplinary careers and interdisciplinary communication based on the experience of Eurodoc’s Interdisciplinarity Workgroup. In our survey-based presentation we are going to address findings regarding the following points: • The interdisciplinary aspect of PhD training highly depends on the importance that we address to communication. • An interdisciplinary career is problematic because it often creates unique expertise that the market is not always ready to apply. • Peer-review is problematic when one evaluates interdisciplinary research. • Doctoral candidates are not always aware of the ways in which their research could become useful in different disciplines. • The divulgation of research results may be compromised by the difficulties in publishing interdisciplinary research. • Having supervisors from different disciplines might be very problematic for some doctoral candidates. • Interdisciplinary doctorates require more time and effort that could only emerge from different environment and regularly meetings that promote a healthy development. • Due to the distinct academic paths followed by PhD candidates and other colleagues, variations in scientific language can be present between disciplines. • The distinct areas of knowledge may have different ways to expose the ideas and main goals what can lead to misunderstandings. • The evaluation of an interdisciplinary thesis faces some particular concerns compared to a regular thesis. Aspects which play an important role are: assessment based on the progress of the work ; interactions among the team, including visits to each other’s institution ; the number of fruitful meetings ; the divulgation of the topic (for instance in small talks in Universities and/or Research Institutes) ; and achievement of the goals. In the workshop we would like to discuss the points from above based on evidence collected by Interdisciplinarity Workgroup. We are going to collect information about what do young researchers think about interdisciplinarity in the process of obtaining the dissertation. Our target group is those that we can reach through internal channels of Eurodoc. We aim to interview 20-40 doctoral candidates and early stage researchers. The data will be further processed by Interdisciplinarity Workgroup and findings will be presented to the participants of The Outcomes of Doctoral Education. We expect to have responses from young researchers from Belgium, Croatia, France, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and the United Kingdom. Also, during the workshop we would like to present policy papers that are currently being developed. We are preparing two papers that focus on (a) Implementation of interdisciplinary mobility and (b) Journal rankings and interdisciplinary doctorates.
