Aesthetics and structures for sustainable development of urban areas – Croatian examples

To achieve sustainable development of urban area, environmental quality, economic health and social equality should be reflected in buildings, infrastructures and towns. Dominating in space and serving to community, large infrastructures are often exposed to public judgment, especially those in urban areas, which are continuously seen by many viewers. Therefore, it is necessary to design not only reliable, durable and economical buildings and bridges, but also visually pleasant structures. Through several projects at the planning or design level as well as completed in last decade in Croatia it will be shown how the objectives of sustainable development could be achieved in urban areas. The described structural engineering projects in the capital city Zagreb, on Adriatic coast and in other regions are closely connected with the global strategy of country’s development. The conservation of natural and cultural environment as one of the major issues confronting Croatia in the years ahead is also included in those projects. Fast growing city and economic development of Zagreb brought about needs for new bridges and buildings. However, those projects are planned though holistic approach and integrated in large-scale projects, including also urban planning of new green areas – recreational zones in order to provide important social and psychological benefits to human societies. Respecting the known aesthetics lows, for Bundek Bridge a unique structure is formed, which is already applied in the new airport terminal design, but it can be also transformed for other future landmark buildings, e.g. central metro station, as a modern style of the 21st century Croatian capital.
