Differences that distinguish us, and similarities that bring us closer. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) Theory - what do bacterias and humans have in common?

The Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory looks at the way organisms acquire and utilise their energy and tries to establish a framework that could capture patterns in organisms ranging from simple unicellular to those much higher on the evolutionary ladder. The general model assumes three energy compartments (sinks) – reserve and structure that build up the biomass and maturity as a sort of deposit-only information bank. Since these compartments are non-measurable, an additional (auxiliary) theory links them to measurable quantities, such as length and weight. The compartments are interlinked with mass and energy fluxes. All of these processes are governed by thermodynamic laws and evolutionary demands, and as such, can be transformed into lists of parameters. Subsequently, that can be translated into sets of mathematical (differential) equations and models. This presentation will cover the general model of DEB Theory : the kappa-model, explain its basic principles (without going into equations) and give some examples of application and possible future model development.
