Sonography of Crohn's disease compared with barium study, CT and patohistological examination

Purpose: To evaluate the role of ultrasound in early detection of complications in Crohn's disease. Methods and materials: 45 patients with already known history of Crohn's diseasewere examined by ultrasound and findings were compared with those of barium study, CT and pathohistological results. Sonograms were obtained with 3.5 and 5 MHz sector or linear transducers using also Doppler technique. Mural thickness of the bowel wall, peristaltic disorders, segmental bowel dilatation, vascularisation and increased blood flow, lymph node enlargments were evaluated. Ascites, abscess collections and other abdominal organ disturbances were observed. Results: Mural thickening and increased blood flow were found in almost all examined patients. Complications as abscesses, fistulas, ascites and stenosis were detected in 2/3 of patients, obstructive uropathy and enlarged lymph nodes were discovered in only a few. Cobnclusion: Ultrasound may be of use in reducing the number of radiological X-ray examinations in usually young patients and thy could be spared during follow-up.
