EMPLOYMENT IN TOURISM: PANACEA OR UTOPIA FOR WESTERN BALKANS

Economic slowdown caused by the global recession has manifested itself as reduced aggregate demand, and thus as reduced need for employees. Regional economies continually lose more jobs than they manage to create. Imposing tourism is in the region often seen as the way to solve economic problems, unemployment in particular. Since tourism is frequently and utterly referred to as an economic activity that is the best and fastest trigger for economic potentials and a panacea for ruined national economies, the basic task of this paper is to explore the possibilities of tourism for solving unemployment problems in the countries of the region, with a scientifically based approach. The paper uses the scie ntific methods common in cabinet work (analysis, synthesis, description, explanation, comparison, induction, deduction), and the main findings of the study are based on statistical methods of regression and correlation analysis. The two major findings of t his work are: 1) Imposing tourism as a monoculture in the economic structure (especially in certain regions) is the wrong approach to solving the problem of unemployment in the new economy and 2) In order to emphasize important role of tourism it is necess ary to associate and to have a joint regional performance on the EU market and the international tourism market, especially on the distant markets of Japan and China
