Intrinsic Deuterium Induced Isotope Effects in C-13 NMR Spectra of Protonated Benzylideneaniline and Azobenzene Isotopomers
Differently deuterium labelled trans-N-benzylideneaniline (1) and trans-azobenzene (2) isotopomers were prepared, protonated and studied by C-13 NMR spectroscopy. A number of deuterium isotope effects (DIE) on C-13 chemical shifts have been observed for protonated and unprotonated species. The protonation was performed by CF_3COOH and spectra measured in C_6D_6 solution. The changes of magnitude, sign and extent of isotope effects in unprotonated and protonated trans-N-benzylideneaniline and trans-azobenzene isotopomers are quite different, what together with only four observed bands in C-13 NMR spectra of protonated trans-azobenzene indicate the fast proton exchange in that molecule (not possible in trans-N-benzylideneaniline). The importance of steric effects and lone-pair interactions in transmission of isotope effects is also discussed.
