Sexual dimorphism in dental crown morphology
Objective: Sex estimation is an important part of forensic odontological investigation. Findings of previous studies on sexual dimorphism are consistent regarding human crown dimensions, with male teeth being larger than female teeth. However, differences in crown trait expression vary across diverse samples. The aim of the present pilot-study was to investigate sex differences in dental crown morphological traits in a sample of contemporary Croatian population. Methods: The study sample consisted of dental plaster casts of male and female dental students, 80 in each group. Dental crown traits were evaluated using the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System. Teeth with pronounced wear, caries, fillings and casting imperfections were not evaluated. For the calculation of intraobserver concordance evaluation was repeated on 50 casts three months after. Log-linear analysis was used to test differences between sexes. Results: Shoveling, double-shoveling, tuberculum dentale, metacone, hypocone and middle trigonid crest were traits expressing sex dimorphism on a statistical significance level of 0.01 or higher. Parastyle, protostylid and tuberculum intermedium were found to be rare traits not allowing statistical analysis. The data for canine distal accessory ridge are published elsewhere. Intraobserver error with difference of two grades or more was low. Conclusions: Results of this study indicate that sex chromosome genes are involved in dental ontogeny. For application of these findings in forensic purposes, further investigations on larger sample and controlling for the effects of crown size are needed.
