Croatia: economy
The chapter presents an analysis of the most important economic indicators for the Croatian economy in 2014, and an assessment of economic outlook for 2015 and 2016. It analyzes the main macroeconomic indicators as well as the trends in sectoral economic performance, with particular emphasis on the effects of the global economic and financial crisis. Although the recession in Croatia was one of the longest among the EU countries, the change of a trend towards slim but nonetheless positive economic performance was asserted by positive figures for the last quarter of 2014 and the first quarter of the 2015 showing that Croatian economy is finally on its way to recovery. Further positive effects on the country’s economic outlook in the short term could also be attributed to more prudent policymaking pressured by the Brussels under EDP, especially with respect to budget expenditures and the implementation of much-needed reforms. However, Croatia is faced with the problem of high external macroeconomic vulnerability with the rising trend in external debt expected to continue in 2015 and 2016 due to high debt service and further borrowing encouraged by the low interest rates. Thus, rapid improvements in growth and job creation are still hard to envisage in the absence of new investments or other factors that could promote growth.
