A Contrastive Analysis of the Spanish and English Auxiliary Verb System
This thesis investigates possible interference of Spanish and English auxiliary verbs with special attention given to the Spanish equivalents of the English verb 'to be'. The study gives an overview of English and Spanish auxiliary verb systems, as well as different theoretical approaches to the distribution of Spanish verbs ser and estar. The practical part of the study consists of a three- part questionnaire that was given to Spanish students enrolled in the bilingual Spanish-English program, and teaching assistants who speak Spanish and are all English native speakers. The results of both groups assert the complexity of use of ser and estar but show no significant interference between English and Spanish. It is evident however that the issue still lacks a sound linguistic explanation.
