Influence of chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) on hypercholesterolemia

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are one of the most important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Risk factors for CVD development are often accompained with disturbance in oxidative status. Oxidative stress, defined as disbalance between reactive oxygen species production and their removal by antioxidants, is often related to pathogenesis of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. Positive impact of plant foods in the prevention of CVD has been attributed partly to their nutritive compounds, but mostly to their biologically active compounds, phytochemicals. Polyphenols are considered to be the most important dietary antioxidants, due to their high abundance in plants and strong antioxidant activity. Aronia (Aronia melanorpa) fruits and their products are one of the richest sources of polyphenols. Materials and Methods: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of aronia powder (AP) consumption on biomarkers of oxidative status in mice model. Male C57BL/6J mice were placed on either a (I) normal diet (ND), (II) ND+AP, (III) cholesterol rich diet (CH) or (IV) CH+AP for six-weaks. Lipid profile (total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, high- density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) were measured in serum in addition to the glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver and kidneys after the treatment period. Results: Hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia were established as a consequence of the cholesterol-rich diets. Hypercholesterolemic diet significantly increased (p<0.05) TC (55.15 %), TAG (78, .96 %) and LDL (172.72 %) in comparison with normal diet. Application of chokeberry powder showed significant impact on lipid profile of the serum in both groups, normocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic. Concentration of total cholesterol, triacylglycerol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased 20.84, 23.03 and 61.10 %, respectively, in normocholesterolemic group while in hypercholesterolemic group decrease was 27.29, 30.84 and 48.88 %, respectively. The high- density lipoprotein cholesterol increased 2.31 and 16.37 % respectively. The activities of hepatic and kidney SOD and GSH were increased while production of MDA decreased. Conclusion: Results obtained in this study demonstrated beneficial effects of chokeberry powder consumption on the lipidemic profile, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes, suggesting that Aronia melanocarpa might contribute prevention of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases.
