Emergence patterns of the mayflies (Insecta, Ephemeroptera) in the area of Plitvice Lakes NP, Croatia
Previous research on mayflies in the National park Plitvice Lakes considered only the larval stage while there were no data on their emergence. Mayfly adults were collected from ten study sites with pyramid–type emergence traps. Sampling was done for the period of two years (2007/2008) while at one study site the emergence pattern was observed for the period of seven years (2007/2013). With 6150 captured specimens, 12 species were recorded. More than half captured specimens belonged to the Baetis genus, recorded at every sampled site. Unfortunately, the distinction between the two inhabiting species of the genus (B. rhodani and B. cf. nubecularis) was mainly impossible. Other numerous recorded species were Alainites muticus, Habrophlebia lauta and Rhithrogena braaschi. The emergence mainly occurred between March and November. The current study provides an important contribution to the knowledge of mayfly ecology in karstic freshwater habitats that forms a basis for further investigation and monitoring of mayflies in this area.
