New bridges for sustainable development of the Adriatic coast in Croatia
Croatia is a land of more than a thousand islands requiring construction of many large bridges in an aggressive maritime environment but also in a zone of large seismicity. After a short review of durability issues of the large arch bridges built in the 20th century, design of two new bridges on the Croatian Adriatic coast is presented in the paper. The new movable Mainland – Čiovo Bridge is currently under construction to relieve traffic congestion on the existing movable bridge. The Mainland – Pelješac Bridge has been intensively planned in the last decade to provide the fixed road link between the whole of Croatia. The main design of the bridge was completed and building permit was obtained. The construction of the bridge began in 2007, but it was slowed down and finally stopped in 2012 due to financial problems. Two alternative bridge solutions were proposed in the new preliminary design, a continuous steel beam bridge and a multi-span extradosed semi-integral bridge with hybrid deck, in order to attempt to reduce costs.
