Bioethanol production in horizontal rotating tubular bioreactor on a semi solid substrate
As natural sources of fossil fuels deplete more demand is put on alternative energy sources. Bioethanol is renewable and from ecological point of view more environment friendly biofuel and because of that it is becoming an interesting alternative for fossil fuels. However, its production is still more expensive than gasoline production. Using integrated bioprocesses where several production steps (e.g. fermentation and separation) are connected into one single unit, bioethanol production can be made more cost-effective and energy saving. Also, using semi solid substrate can potentially reduce liquid contend of the fermented broth which can further reduce energy demands in the later phases of bioethanol isolation. During this research, natural isolate of yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used as a working microorganism. The study of ethanol production was performed by different combination of horizontal rotating bioreactor operational parameters [i.e. different rotation speed, different type of rotation (constant/interval)] and obtained results were compared on a basis of bioprocess efficiency parameters.
