Trends of nickel, arsenic, cadmium and lead in PM10 in Zagreb, Croatia

The monitoring of metals in airborne particulate matter in Zagreb, Croatia began in 1972 as part of a local air quality monitoring network. From 1972 to 2005, metals were determined in total suspended particulate matter. Due to changes in legislation regarding air quality, from 2006, concentrations of nickel, arsenic, cadmium and lead are measured in the PM10 particle fraction. Daily samples were collected 2006-2015 at three sites: city centre (densely populated area), western part of the city (industrial area) and the eastern part of the city (sparsely populated area with some industrial influence). Samples were collected on 90 mm-diameter membrane filters (~100 m3 of air/day) and 47 mm-diameter quartz filters (~50 m3 of air/day). Samples were prepared using high temperature wet digestion and high pressure microwave digestion system (Ultraclave IV, Milestone). Concentrations of metals were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) from 2006 to July 2010 and subsequently by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Mass concentrations of nickel, arsenic, cadmium and lead in PM10 in the period of 2006-2015 were not high: annual mean values ranged from 0.6 to 4.4 ngm-3 for Ni, 0.5-1.5 ngm-3 for As, 0.07-0.9 ngm-3 for Cd and 6.0-20.0 ngm-3 for Pb at three measuring sites in Zagreb. Also, there was no statistically significant difference in the measured concentrations between the different sampling sites. The obtained data showed a slightly decreased trend in annual mean values for Ni, As and Cd, but for Pb it showed a strong decreasing trend due to an increased consumption of lead-free gasoline in Croatia.
