Back-calculating growth at age from scale readings for Squalius microlepis Heckel, 1843 and Scardinius plotizza Heckel & Kner, 1858 in the Neretva River basin (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
The lower Neretva River and its tributaries are situated in the fertile valley of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. This region is also well known for several endemic fish species, among which belong Adriatic rudd (Scardinius plotizza) and makal dace (Squalius microlepis). This is the first investigation of growth in length of S. Microlepis, which shows fast growth in the first year and relatively stable growth until the sixth year, then slows down. After the first year the S. plotizza in this research attained a length of 12.76 cm. No specimens of S. microlepis in age-class 5, or of S. plotizza in age-classes 6 and 8 were caught. However, it is not unusual that some age-classes are missing in fish growth investigations.
