Multimode fiber transmission using room temperature double-fused 1.54 μm vertical-cavity lasers

We present the very first long-wavelength vertical-cavity laser (VCL) multimode transmission experiments. These lasers are ideal for local area networks. The VCLs were double-fused and operated continuous-wave at 1.54 μm at room-temperature. Data rates of 155 Mb/s were transmitted over 1 km on a multimode fiber with bit-error rates less than 10/sup -10/ for VCLs with diameters of 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, and 26 μm. The RC-limited bandwidths were typically 2-3 GHz for these VCLs. The yield of the devices was higher than 90%.
