Posssible impact of biotechnology on the future development of the pharmaceutical industry
The bioscience technology as a broader term of modern biotechnology is the most important way of searching to solve biological problems of clinical significance to mankind. To simply maintain in the pharmaceutical industry, a modest industry growth rate of 8%, companies would need to triple the number of new molecular entities launched annually. In the present article authors emphasise the role of university in evaluating new drugs in the research connected to the pharmaceutical industry. The techniques of molecular biology and the application of biological markers have led to the introduction of cell-based assays and these have revolutionised the screening process. Biological molecules with related activities have similarities to each other, so it is possible to design libraries for specific protein families. That is the reason why past genomics era is continued with the more promising proteomics time. The greater efficiency in the discovery of new drugs and the development of new products containing them is never-ending process. The integration of science, project management and understanding of creative people is crucial for the success. The authors emphasise some of the future products based on biotechnology by introducing and application of biomarkers, production of therapeutic antibodies, application of proteomics, steem cell technology as well as new drug delivery ways.
