Applicability of a Linearized Model for the Unsteady Gas Flow in Pipes
A simple gas system consisting of a supply regulator valve, a pipeline and a consumer valve is considered. The dynamic behavior of the system is analyzed in the regime of a periodically oscillating consumer mass flow superimposed on a steady state one. The mathematical model of unsteady, one-dimensional, isothermal, compressible, viscous flow is adopted. The model consists of a set of first order non-linear partial differential equations of hyperbolic type. The analytic solution of the considered problem was determined on the basis of a simplified and linearized mathematical model. This analytical solution is compared to the numerical solution of the full mathematical model, which was attained using the method of characteristics. The obtained results clearly indicate the conditions for which the linearized model can be accepted as accurate in any particular usage.
