Influence of plant extracts on bacterial adhesion

The oral cavity of healthy individuals contains hundreds of different bacterial. The critical first step to bacterial invasion or secretion from oral cavity and generally from gastrointestinal system is adhesion. In this study influence of dandelion leaves, rosemary leaves and dandelion flowers extracts on bacterial adhesion onto mammalian tongue epithelial cells (CalB1) was investigated. Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus fermentum were used as representatives of useful lactic acid bacteria in human mouth, while Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium LT21 and Escherichia coli K-12 MG1655 were used as bacterial pathogens. Extracts were tested in the range of concentrations that are expected to be consumed over the food. Cytotoxicity tests showed influence of tested extracts on CalB1 survival. To test influence of extracts on bacterial adhesion to CalB1 cells, concentrations that showed over 60% of cell survival were chosen. There was no effect on Lactobacillus binding, but extracts significantly reduced the adhesion of bacterialpathogens. S. enterica binding was reduced to 20% while E. coli up to 50% compared to control. Dandelion leaves, rosemary leaves and dandelion flowers extracts have not influence of lactic acid bacteria binding but significantly decreased bacterial pathogens S. enterica and E. coli adhesion onto CalB1.
