Green solvents for green technologies

In many industrial processes large quantities of volatile and flammable organic solvents are used in various reaction systems and separation steps defining a major part of the environmental and economic performance of a process. Accordingly, a growing area of research in the development of green technologies is devoted to designing new, environmentally-friendly, and tuneable solvents which use would meet both technological and economical demands. Over the last few years, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have been dramatically expanding in popularity as promising alternatives to traditional organic solvents. NADES may be considered as ‘designer solvents’ due to their numerous structural variations and possibility to design their physicochemical properties which makes them very interesting for potential use in synthetic chemistry, electrochemistry, making nanomaterials, biocatalysis and separation and analysis of various compounds. Furthermore, NADES are based on compounds that are safe for human consumption which opens numerous possibilities for their applications in the field of life sciences. Herein, a brief overview of the up to date knowledge regarding these solvents, with special emphasis on to two possible applications: (1) extraction of phenolic compounds from grape pomace and (2) biocatalytic synthesis of interesting chiral intermediates by using purified enzymes (lipase) and whole-cell biocatalysis (yeast and plant cells) will be presented.
