Henry Lawson's Womanish Wail
The article describes the formulation of the Henry Lawson author function and its placement at the central position within the Australian Myth and the cultural tradition it entails. Positioned as the main empowering element of the local rubric which demands the right of the local to articulate, the local Lawson is formulated as the founding father of the Nation. Therefore his stories make a paramount contribution to the construction of the Myth. However, as each piece of literature necessarily “gets away” from its author, points of divergence from the Myth in Lawson’s work are identified and described. It is precisely in the element of departure from the Myth, in his, so called, feminine streak, that Lawson’s greatness is revealed, which constitutes the most important aporia of Australian nationalism.
