Odnos učenika osmih razreda osnovnih škola u Zagrebu prema sredstvima ovisnosti

A study on the attitude of the eighth-grade primary school students towards addictive substances (cigarettes, alcohol, drugs) was carried out in Zagreb during 1998/99. The relation between problems in family and addictive behavior of the students, and the effects of both were analyzed. The data were obtained through a questionnaire answered by 582 students (297 male and 285 female). The survey was anonymous. According to the answers, 59.1% of the students never used addictive substance, 23.0% experimented with them, and 17, 9% used them periodically or continuously. The rate of substance use was: 15.5% for cigarettes, 3.3% for alcohol, and 2.6% for drugs. Males smoked and consumed alcohol at a significantly higher rate than females. Females consumed drugs only slightly more than males. Most prevalent was smoking, followed by smoking and alcohol consumption, smoking and drug use, and combined use of all these substances. Students with problems in family and those in whose families alcohol was excessively consumed were significantly more inclined toward consuming alcohol and drugs. In the subjects who had problems in their families, studying and concentration problems were significantly more common, and so were in those who were smoking and consuming drugs. Since the study results pointed to an association between family problems and addictive behavior of the students, it appears necessary to include families in the Program of Specific and Preventive Measures of Health Care for Pupils as an important factor in the prevention of addictive behavior.
