Supramolecular complexes based on molybdates and different Co(III)-ammine units via electrostatic and H−bonding interactions

The rational design and synthesis of supramolecular materials by using polyoxometalates (POMs) as inorganic building blocks are of current trend in synthetic chemistry.1 Polyoxometalate anions can link different transition metal complexes or their fragments as charge−compensating units. These oppositely charged units can be employed to build crystals through either hydrogen bonds or electrostatic interactions and such inorganic− organic hybrid materials can combine the advantages of both POMs and common hybrid materials.2 Our research3 on reactions of discrete [MoO3(C2O4)]2- and [Mo2O5(C2O4)2(H2O)2] 2- anions and different cationic Co(III) complexes resulted in a series of new organic−inorganic hybrid compounds, [Co(ONO)(NH3)5][MoO3(C2O4)(H2O)] · H2O (1), [Co(NH3)6]2[Mo2O4(μ- O)2(C2O4)2]2[MoO3(C2O4)] (2), [Co(NH3)6]2[Mo4O11(C2O4)4(H2O)]n · 5 H2O (3), [Co(en)3]2[MoO(μ-O)2(C2O4)]2[MoO3(C2O4) (H2O)] (4), [Co(en)3]2[Mo4O10(μ-O)2(C2O4)4] · 2 H2O (5) and [Co(C2O4) (en)2]2[Mo2O5(C2O4)2(H2O)2] (6) (en = etilendiamine). These compounds were prepared in pH range 2.5−4.5 and under room temperature or in case of 5 under hydrothermal conditions. It is evident that structure of anionic oxomolybdenum oxalates essentially depends upon the nature of the cation and the pH of the solution from which they were crystallized.4 In all compounds the oppositely charged Co(III) complexes and molybdate anions are interacted by H−bonding and electrostatic interaction forming supramolecular structure. Molecular and crystal structure, infrared spectra and thermal properties have been investigated for all compounds
