Valorisation of tomato peel waste as a sustainable source for pectin, polyphenols and fatty acids recovery
The opportunity of tomato peel (TP) waste recycling as a sustainable source for the extraction of value added-chemicals is presented in order to implement viable cyclical economy principle in solving the main problem of waste disposal. Prior to polyphenols and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) extraction, the pectin removed from tomato peel cuticle was evaluated as a possible tin corrosion inhibitor. Corrosion results point out that tomato peel pectin is a more efficient inhibitor (65.8 %) compared to commercially available pectin (52.3 %), which mean that under-utilized tomato biomass can be used for development of new generation of corrosion inhibitors. Polyphenols data showed that these compounds are isolated in remarkable amounts, depending on extraction conditions, i.e. types of samples (pectin incorporated or not in TP cuticle), solvents (70 and 96 % ethanol) and extraction times (3, 6 and 12 h). Regarding FAMEs, the polyunsaturated was isolated in greatest amount, i.e. 22.91 - 55.64 % and 45.13 - 64.98 %, depending of TP samples (with and without pectin). The presence of palmitic, oleic and linolenic, as three dominant FAMEs, was also confirmed by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. In conclusion, the proposed work points out that tomato peel waste can be considered as a promising industrial resource for simultaneous recovery of pectin, polyphenols and fatty acids bio-compounds.
