Electric Vehicle Power Train Problems in Relation to Bearing Currents and EMC Issues

In the context of electrical drives and energy efficiency perspective a demand to improve reliability and estimation of the remaining useful life in electrical drives through the condition monitoring. The phenomenon of voltages and currents on motor and generator shafts been well known to accelerate the bearing degradation and its known for the last 100 years. Shaft voltages can arise from multiple sources, resulting in the apparition of shaft currents. Unbalanced magnetic fields caused by design or rotor eccentricities due to mechanical stress can create a magnetic flux encircling the shaft that are induced voltages in the shaft and may cause a circulating current thought shaft via bearing to a housing of motors and around. This paper aims to demonstrate another aspect of EMC problem solving. All the problems that arise within the electric motors due to the non-sinusoidal power supply and the imperfection of the construction cause an undesirable amount of energy inside the motor that ultimately leads to bearing currents of low and high frequencies.
