P removal at anoxic/oxic conditions

The nitrification, denitrification and P removal capability of activated sludge at anoxic/oxic conditions was tested in a batch reactor. Sodium acetate was used as the only source of carbon at different C/P ratios (C/P 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10). During the anoxic phase the biomass uptakes COD. The oxic phase resulted in simultaneous COD removal, nitrification and dephosphatation. By increasing the C/P ratio the phosphate removal rate and the efficiency of P removal were increased. The NH4-N oxidation resulted in NO3-N and NO2-N accumulation but not in a stechiometric equivalent. Dephosphatation was directly influenced by C/P ratios and, maximum P removal of 52% occured at C/P 10.
