Novi liburnski cipusi iz Aserije
After the renewed archaeological excavations in Asseria (1998-2002), fifteen recently discovered tombstones, so-called Liburnian cippuses should be added to the established corpus of Liburnian tombstones. Up to now 83 cippuses have been discovered in Liburnia making a rather specific cathegory of gravestones. Three subgroups are determined (together with addidtional fourth one, consisting of mixed features), differing in their style, tectonics and decoration. 49 cippuses originate from Asseria, 18 from Iader, 9 from the island of Krk, and further 7 from a number of other sites. The Asseriate subgroup, the most numerous one (63 % of all monuments since yet known), has distinctive characteristics. Of 15 new found monuments in Asseria, 13 belong to the Asseriate subgroup, and remaining two to the mixed subgroup. New examples strongly confirm the opinion that in Asseria in the 1st and 2nd century AD existed a workshop producing this kind of representative monuments. The analysis of inscriptions on the cippuses confirm the special role of women who are more numerous as well as buried persons as commemorators recorded by the inscriptions. There are 9 persons directly mentioned, and two persons more confirmed by filiation in the name formula. The names recorded belong to the group of Roman names known from previously published inscription from Asseria. Also there are no elements indicating the ethnic origin or the statuses of persons involved - another peculiarity of this kind of evidence. Regarding the datation of these 15 monuments it should be noted that not a single tombstone bears any indicative element. The author however argues, particularly mentioning the lack of the dedicaton formula Dis Manibus, that these monuments belong to the second half of the 1st and the first half of the 2nd century.
