Croatian place names as a reflection of regional and national heritage and identity

The complex stratification of Croatian toponymy reflects centuries of coexistence of the various ethnic groups that have settled on the Eastern coast of the Adriatic and its hinterland throughout history. Centuries of linguistic interpenetration and the merging of various cultural traditions have left an indelible imprint on Croatian toponymy. Croatian place names therefore represent important linguistic monuments of the linguistic, cultural and social heritage of the people who created them.
