Pilgrimage and/or Tourism in Bosnian Croat Shrine of Kondžilo

I focus on one approach to pilgrimage closely connected to tourism that, although mentioned and discussed in some earlier works, has recently become a focus of interest for some scholars dealing with migration, pilgrimage and religious tourism. Roots pilgrimage, as it is known, addresses those travellers/pilgrims that annually travel to their homelands which they were forced to leave because of economic situation, war, political pressure, or some other reason. Their travel back home is observed as pilgrimage to their family and national roots even though some of them are not actually going to some official religious pilgrimage place. In this paper I will address this kind of travel/pilgrimage by Bosnian Croats, who combine the secular form with religious pilgrimage to Kondžilo in Northeast Bosnia and Herzegovina. This paper describes and considers the nature of travel/pilgrimage behavior, its emic meaning to pilgrims and its connection to religious tourism. The ethnographic case problematizes the relationship and boundary between the concepts of tourism and pilgrimage and illustrates how the context in which we observe them can have a significant influence on how we define the participants as pilgrims, tourist or pilgrims and tourist. It seems that this journey/pilgrimage consist of the “secular” journey and the “religious” pilgrimage. It fulfils two main functions that are mixed and complementing each other ; on one side it is a gathering of displaced community accompanied with leisure time and festivities, and on the other it is a religious pilgrimage of the individual in need of spiritual comfort. It seems that religious pilgrimage to Kondžilo is not the only motive for the travel, but it is a good reason to go back to old home – to roots.
