Cultural-historical discussion "The Female Soul in the light of History" by Mavro Špicer
Mavro Špicer (1862-1936) was certainly one of the most interesting Croatian intellectuals of his time but despite his significant work in the area of philology, his name today is almost unknown. His last work, the cultural-historical discussion entitled Ženska duša u svjetlu povijesti (The Female Soul in light of History) came out in 1936, only a few months before his death. Špicer’s views did not significantly vary from typical male discussion on the so called female issue which intensified in Europe at the end of the 19th century. Getting to know his theories gives today’s reader an insight into the life philosophies of Croatia’s educated citizens between the two world wars. We can conclude that in Špicer's cultural- historical discussion a positive attitude towards women dominated, but every deviation of women away from the traditional role indisputably was seen as a danger to conservative Croatian society in the first half of the 20th century.
