On the Nature of the Relationship between Source and Target Domains in Metaphorical Slang Expressions
Slang expressions are considered a very important source of language enrichment. Therefore, they represent an extremely valuable site for investigating different metaphorical meanings and the nature of the relationship between source and target domains. Traditionally, source domains are regarded relatively concrete, and target domains more abstract areas. The paper focuses on the analysis of the nature of the relationship between source and target domains in slang expressions in which source domains correspond to parts of the human body, animals and food, while target domains refer to abstract qualities and states. The results show that, in comparison to the other two source domains, the human body is the least restricted in its reference to abstract qualities and states.
