Gender Representation in Superhero Comic Books: The Case of Ms Marvel
Popular culture today offers a vast array of, among other products, TV shows, films, literature, music and comic books that all have a specific role in articulation of race, class, gender and social categories. Regarding the representation of female characters during the first decade of superhero comic books (The Golden Age) women were presented mainly as a weaker gender in constant need to be helped or saved by male protagonists and as their love interest. Later on, many female characters that were independent and strong were portrayed as mostly villains. However, as with aspects of class and race in popular comic book culture, female characters started to emerge in later years as main protagonists. One of the earliest characters and today one of the most popular was the first character who carried the name of Ms. Marvel - Carol Danvers. Debuting in 1977 during the women's liberation movement, Carol was somewhat distinguished from many other female characters by having her standalone adventures. However, her portrayal has layered issues that are constant aspects of representation of female characters in popular culture: her characterization was dependent on her experiencing sexual violence (rape), impregnation, mental issues (such as multiple personality disorder, alcoholism), hyper- sexualisation and judgment from male characters. This paper offers the visual and discourse analysis to point out various mechanisms of representation of female characters in popular culture today and throughout history on an example of female superhero Ms Marvel.
