The Misconception of the Ottoman Empire History And Its Institutions in Southeastern Europe as A Result of Wrong Teaching of the Old Education System

Ottoman Empire is the only one among the eastern empires which boasts its long existence in the aria of Southeastern Europe. Its longevity is due to particular resistance and adaptability of its institutions, so the history of the Ottoman Empire can not be considered separately from institutions' history. The data of the Ottoman institutions were often inaccurate, incomplete and one-sided at different periods. This report tries to point out to a distorted perception of the nature of the Ottoman rule in the old Croatian educational system, and consequently in other countries of Southeastern Europe, and the former Yugoslavia, which were once under Ottoman rule. In the second half of the 20th century, Croatian historiography was closely related to the historiography of these countries and had a lot of in common, which resulted in an uniform attitude towards the character of Ottoman rule. The intention of this paper is not to specifically quote inaccurate claims of the old system but briefly refer to some misconceptions and stereotypes that result out of wrong interpretations. Here, the teaching on the pre-university level is considered because it affected all that went through education system where most of the misconceptions had been created. Only some of the institutions are analyzed, i.e. phenomena that took place during the Ottoman rule in Southeastern Europe. These are connected with particular social relations, mostly unclear and subject to misinterpretation, still causing many controversies and disagreements.
