Driving under influence in Split-Damatian County

The aim of the study is to investigate the influence of alcohol and drug consumption on fatal road traffic accidents occurred in Split-Dalmatian County from October 2001 to April 2010, that were autopsied (451) and toxicologically analyzed (309). The autopsy reports of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Split University Hospital and School of Medicine were reviewed. Alcohol concentration were analysed in various victims (car drivers, 155 ; car passangers, 75 ; motorcyclists, 91 ; motorcycle passangers, 13 ; pedestrian, 97 ; bicyclist, 3 ; tractor drivers, 4 ; and lorry drivers, 3 ; ) and to determine influence of alcohol on traffic misfortune over a nine year period. Blood alcohol concentration was measured by gas chromatography with headspace and flame ionization detector (FID). Alcohol was regarded as a contributive death factor if the blood concentration was positive (BAC > 0.5 g/kg). In 165 cases the concentration of alcohol in blood was positive (in 42 % cases BAC were between 1.5 and 2.5 g/kg) with the highest number of positive finding occuring in car drivers. Traffic accident victims were analysed according to sex, age, blood concentracion and by type of traffic participant. The most frequent victims in traffic accidents were male drivers and their accidents were more often associated with consumption of alcohol, whether being in control of a vechicle or involved indirectly. The consumation of alcohol produced a significant increase in culpability. The results of our study show that alcohol still remains one of the main factors of traffic accidents in our County.
